The Roman Chair is a key piece from The Romance Collection, which is inspired by the craft traditions of the designer’s family and the contrasting practices of her great-grandparents. Basia Pruszyńska great-grandfather, Roman, was a blacksmith and carpenter; her great-grandmother, Halinka, worked with intricate embroidery.
In The Romance, she explores how the opposing qualities of their crafts—Roman’s hard, industrial materials and Halinka’s soft, detailed textiles—can coexist within a single piece of furniture. Basia invites the warmth of embroidery into the cold, rigid world of metal and wood. Textile gestures like ruffles and bows take on structural roles, often replacing screws and traditional fasteners. These elements blur the line between function and ornamentation.
In The Roman Chair, the scalloped motifs and tactile softness found in Halinka’s embroidery serve as a conceptual counterpoint to the stark, cool surface of aluminum. The piece becomes a contemporary heirloom—a physical manifestation of generational craftsmanship reimagined through a new aesthetic language.
