Ieva Gudelaityté draws inspiration from the personal and the mythological to create Inter, a striking piece that transcends its function as furniture. As a child, Gudelaityté received small totemic figures, crafted with intentionally distorted proportions, believed to bring good fortune. These figures, embodying supernatural qualities, carried symbolic meanings tied to specific body parts—a tradition rooted in ancient beliefs.
Throughout human history, congenital anomalies have evoked diverse interpretations, from ominous warnings to divine blessings. The term “monster,” derived from the Latin monstrare (to show or reveal), reflects this duality. While often met with fear, such forms were also revered as symbols of spiritual power, divinity, or shamanic wisdom.
Inter is the inaugural piece in Gudelaityté’s collection, designed to merge utility with profound symbolism. It invites contemplation of the body as a vessel of expression and spirituality: Does the body reveal the soul, or does it act as its canvas? Conversely, can an unusual body signify an extraordinary spirit?
Crafted from an organic mixture with a textured, salt-encrusted surface, Inter transforms bodily irregularities into a focal point of aesthetic allure and metaphysical significance. This piece challenges perceptions of imperfection, framing malformations as conduits of luck and carriers of spiritual depth.
