The FL50 floor lamps start from salvaged pieces of natural stone, used in a previous life as window sills or in danger of ending up in a dumpster somewhere. Based on HITCH’s circular connectors, we designed a support structure in stainless steel, into which the stones are now clamped. This structure also carries a tube light which illuminates both the stones and the space around them.
The stones thus become more than they were before. They do not lie in mortar or hang glued to a support but stand proudly upright and carry the structure that sheds light on their natural beauty. In this, they are unusually “independent”, as most designs that use stone tend to fixate them to other materials. For us, that independence is crucial, since it also ensures that the stones can have other future lives. With nothing more than a screwdriver the pieces can be detached again without any damage to the stone.
The steel structure that makes this future reuse of the stone possible is deliberately left rough. With visible traces of the laser machining it underwent, it retreats into the background and is obedient to what it clamps down. What was in danger of becoming waste thus regains a dignified place. From a deep respect for the material, a new story emerges.
This lamp can be customized to work in any country.
