Description

Drinking coffee with your loved ones is a ritual in Turkish culture. It is said that “a shared cup of coffee will be remembered for 40 years” . This is the reason why the “Arch of Sinan” Coffee Cups are sold as a set of two.

These pieces are created with an admiration for the 16th century great architect Sinan’s work. The unusual way Sinan used and refined classical architectural elements always attracted designer Hülya Öz’s attention. As a native of historic Istanbul, the use of similar forms is an outcome of her visual memory.

The porcelain part of the cup may contain some curvatures at the top. Please be aware that the pieces are all handmade. Manufacturing these components using classic materials such as porcelain and glass, represents Öz’s passion for craftsmanship. The fact that there are still many craftsmen and workshops in Istanbul is an opportunity for cooperation that the designer has engaged in formal and technical terms.

About the designer

ZOYA ISTANBUL

“It’s not easy for a design without a story to appeal to the eye. Whatever story the viewer is able to unite with, that’s what the eye chooses.” Hulya Oz Coming to life through Hulya Oz’s architectural and aesthetic touch, ZOYA Istanbul with its unique balance and stories attached, finds us with the creative claim of maturing over the years. As the founder and designer of the brand ZOYA Istanbul, Oz’s intention with her first collection ‘Geometry of the Universe’ is to appeal to women who value independence. At the core of her designs there is a common geometrical language that has been based on different geographies of the world, mainly Turkey, Anatolia. Each and every design is formed with Oz’s experiences, emotions and her excitement of expression. For those who wish to deepen their understanding of architectural culture beyond what is seen and those who desire to have meaning behind their aesthetic decisions, ZOYA Istanbul presents us with products that refine and symbolise the ways of the universe, balance and harmony. Oz states, “My decision making process as I was choosing a time period and a visual representation for my  collection was not formed by a longing for the past but was rather reinforced by my desire to carry on the wisdom of then to the now, and translate it to the future. Cultural profundity, underlining wisdom and aiming to remove degeneration between generations... ‘Arch of Sinan’ is a collection about understanding these notions and depicting them to those who are interested...’’

Presenting “PROXIMITY”, a collection created in collaboration with Southern Sweden Design Days showcasing a selection of new work from ten designers and studios. As a whole, the collection contemplates the notion of proximity, interconnection, and belonging. Whether through contemporary references to traditional crafts techniques; the use of locally sourced materials such as wool, lichen, steel, and wood; or playful visualisations of the notion itself, the selected pieces illustrate the importance of closeness, interconnection, and kinship in uncertain times. Featuring pieces by Andrea Santivanez, Andréason & Leibel, Ebba Lindgren, Förstberg Ling, Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, Lab La Bla, Lisa Darland, Louise Hederström, Moa Lönn, and Studio M. Organised by Form/Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, Southern Sweden Design Days is an annual event currently in its second edition, which highlights sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation in design. This year’s theme, as described by the event organisers, “[reflects] on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc”. The physical exhibition of “PROXIMITY” will take place at Lokstallarna, Södra Bulltoftavägen 51, 212 22 Malmö from 19 - 22 May 2022.
