Drinking coffee with your loved ones is a ritual in Turkish culture. It is said that “a shared cup of coffee will be remembered for 40 years” . This is the reason why the “Arch of Sinan” Coffee Cups by ZOYA Istanbul, are sold as a set of two.
With a global design view, I am using local cultural elements as an advantage to create unique products. As I am working with Turkish craftsmen in a way that allows me to be freer in the use of symbols and icons in my design pieces.
Everyone pushes and expands each other’s limits in the production phases; where design, technology and craftsmen skills walk hand in hand under the knowledge which is inherited from our ancestors.
These pieces are created with an admiration for the 16th century great architect Sinan’s work. The unusual way Sinan used and refined classical architectural elements always attracted my attention. As a native of historic Istanbul, the use of similar forms is an outcome of my visual memory.
The porcelain part of the cup may contain some curvatures at the top. Please be aware that the pieces are all handmade. Manufacturing these components using classic materials such as porcelain and glass, represents Hülya Öz’s passion for craftsmanship. The fact that there are still many craftsmen and workshops in Istanbul is an opportunity for cooperation that the designer has engaged in formal and technical terms.
