Switch is a conceptual object, designed as part of Nush’s thesis collection. Drawing from the objects and spaces of street vendors in India, the object combines the seemingly disconnected functions of seating and storage. The Walnut and Red Oak serve to contrast each other and separate the functions of the object visually. When oriented vertically, each individual shelf profile dictates how that particular shelf is used, drawing from the specific ways in which street vendors store and display various items. The object can be reoriented horizontally and used as a bench with a floating panel for objects and a subtle indent, indicating where the hand is placed. The profile of each red-oak shelf protrudes through the walnut boards of the seating surface, hinting at the manner in which each can be used.
Walnut boards with intersecting red oak shelves secured with through tenons and dowels and finished in natural oil.
