The Mono-material process.
Raw pine is the sole material used throughout this project. It forms the body of the object, its offcuts fuel the burner, and the black charcoal pigment, added in the oil finish, equally derives form the same pine wood.
The pine slats originate from partition walls commonly found in attics and cellars all over Switzerland. In bunkers, these nailed structures were designed to be easily taken apart in the case of emergency to create liveable spaces, or furniture such as beds.
In our case, we salvage this valuable material in Zurich, from mid-century houses which are due to be demolished. By doing so we are proud to share stories unique to Switzerland and save resources which would otherwise be incinerated or go to landfill.
We produce in batches. Every object is unique, carrying with it marks of the past, still visible after the unique charing process. The forms and textures arise purely through the process of burning and brushing. In other words the soft radius and interlacing curves are obtained by repeating the process several times. No mechanical tools involved.
We are always open to collaborate and innovate. So do get in touch for special orders.
