Description

The Mono-material process.
Raw pine is the sole material used throughout this project. It forms the body of the object, its offcuts fuel the burner, and the black charcoal pigment, added in the oil finish, equally derives form the same pine wood.
The pine slats originate from partition walls commonly found in attics and cellars all over Switzerland. In bunkers, these nailed structures were designed to be easily taken apart in the case of emergency to create liveable spaces, or furniture such as beds.
In our case, we salvage this valuable material in Zurich, from mid-century houses which are due to be demolished. By doing so we are proud to share stories unique to Switzerland and save resources which would otherwise be incinerated or go to landfill.
We produce in batches. Every object is unique, carrying with it marks of the past, still visible after the unique charing process. The forms and textures arise purely through the process of burning and brushing. In other words the soft radius and interlacing curves are obtained by repeating the process several times. No mechanical tools involved.

We are always open to collaborate and innovate. So do get in touch for special orders.

About GEORG FOSTER Visit Showroom →

Georg Foster's work is predominantly process driven. Be it in the details or in the overall construction outcome is the direct response to the production methods, be it cutting, carving, burning, casting or projecting. His work is at the interface of industrial design, material research and traditional craftsmanship. He strives for his work to be accessible and not superficial. The themes of reuse and hyper local production, as he likes to call it, run through all his projects. These principles often serve as the initial inspiration and guideline in his creative process. His passion for materials was shaped by his childhood in Rwanda, Cameroon, Turkey and Switzerland, where he spent a lot of time outdoors in search of adventure. From an early age, he experimented with collected materials, exploring new paths far off the beaten track. The local crafts and materials he encountered left a deep mark and still inspire his work today. Thanks to collaboration, it is a privilege for him to endlessly learn from renowned brands such as Vitra, Marsotto Edizioni, l'Epée, Aesop and Hérmes as well as experienced craftspeople such as Fonderie Brügger or Klötzli Messerschmied.
