The Calendar from The Smog Collection by A* alittlemore studio encodes the seasonal transitions of the landscape including the farming cycles of wheat, rice and cotton across one calendar year. The landscape is abstractly represented across the rug, morphing as the seasons change. Starting from spring and ending in the dead of winter, the hues in the rug transmute and shift creating a soft visual assemblage of colors and textures across the tapestry of The Calendar. Essentially a calendar that maps the landscape, the rug showcases the journey of the landscape using visual cues that represent each crop as it’s sowed and eventually harvested. Dramatic shifts in color and texture showcase the atmospheric effects of crop burning onto the land and the sky, its effect reverberating into other seasons. The rug is carefully hand-knotted by local weavers, infusing the regional influence into their craft.
About the collection: A foray into visual storytelling depicting vivid abstractions of the Punjabi Landscape – the collection consists of a series of three hand-knotted rugs made of 100% hand-spun wool. The wool is hand-dyed and the rugs are trimmed meticulously by skilled artisans. What began as a single rug – The Calendar – soon expanded into a series of three limited edition pieces.This collection of rugs is an homage to the land showcasing climate change due to the catastrophic interventions perpetuated by humans. The labor intensive process of carpet making mirrors the hardships endured by farmers desperate to ready the land in time for the next sowing season – in their fervor burning expansive swathes of land that pollutes the land and sky for weeks on end, slowly sapping the once bountiful Punjabi soil of its nutrients.
