Description

Quetschi by Thomas Waidhofer is a work series of lamps and furniture based on a crimped cross connection of 50mm aluminum tubes. Mostly, the joints are necessary to create stability or shapes, but they can also be introduced just as a style element. The crimped surfaces are made with a custom-built workshop press. The squeezing creates strong forces in the material, sometimes leading to cracks and fractures, but these are considered imperfections. When used as a lamp, the wiring is visible on the outside, which is meant to be a statement against the flawlessness of modern lighting design, which always means less lamp and more light.

About Thomas Waidhofer Visit Showroom →

Born in 1988, Thomas is a viennese artist and designer. After his apprenticeship as a high voltage electrician he studied digital art at the university of applied arts. During his study it became apparent that his work was more about artistic design than digital values. Since 2015 he works on objects, spaces and installations, in which he always tries to give narratives to conventional furnishings. In some cases, old furniture and lamps serve as a medium, while new objects are often constructed using all the tools of technology and craftsmanship. His work mostly revolves around imperfectionism or even the destruction of something considered perfect. Thomas counts recognizing the beauty of flaws as one of his most important skills. From minimalism to the extraordinary, all tastes are served by mixing different styles. He likes to describe his work with two words - beauties & beasts.
