Description

Purple Terrain is a wall light that fuses fine art and functional design. As the porcelain sheets are fired, they show signs of natural imperfections, which reveal their unique character. Instead of discarding flawed pieces which break during the heat of firing, the kintsugi gold leaf repair technique is employed. This transformative process not only breathes new life into what was once considered waste, but it also imbues the ceramic with a newfound beauty, characterized by its golden scars. Each lit surface reveals entirely unique one-of-a-kind idiosyncrasies while challenging the paradigms of wasteful use and replace mindset. The edges are reminiscent of parchment, with the fine detail of porcelain luminosity. The distinctive iridescent coloring creates a marbled chromatic panorama akin to landscape topography. Architectural clay sheets are formed by pouring porcelain slip on a plaster slab and then carefully dried before being fired twice in the kiln. The luminous properties of the light are heightened by adding iridescent colors to the porcelain, which results in exquisitely luminous and ethereal translucency when internally lit. Detailed instructions for mounting are provided.

About Sarah Tracton Visit Showroom →

Drawn to exploring the infinite possibilities of porcelain translucency, fine artist and designer Sarah Tracton handcrafts lighting that is luminous, experimental and ethereal.  To achieve her lighting’s remarkable diaphanous effect, Sarah honed her artistry at the National Art School in Sydney, mastering an unique technique of pouring clay slip on a plaster slab, then heightening its luminous properties by adding iridescent colours to the porcelain, which results in exquisite celestial translucency when internally lit. She repairs the porcelain which has shattered in firing stages with Kintsugi gold leaf technique, combating wasting with circular economy. A dual existence as fine art and function design.  Each lit surface reveals unique one-of-a-kind idiosyncrasies, embracing the intriguing variations inherent in the handcrafting process.
