The Narrative series is a collection of sculptural furniture pieces that reinterpret traditional Korean forms through the lens of contemporary materiality, particularly metal—a medium familiar to the artist. The second piece in the series draws inspiration from the Jangseung, a traditional wooden totem historically placed at the entrances of villages or crossroads in Korea to ward off evil spirits and guide travelers. Known for their exaggerated facial features and unique proportions, these figures have long stirred the imagination of the Korean people. While their presence has faded in modern life, this work revives their spirit by combining carved wood with the stark, industrial qualities of metal, creating a sculptural tension between tradition and modernity, organic and artificial.
The Jangseung piece was created in collaboration with a traditional Korean woodcraft master.
