Description

The “MA 間 – WEAVE” rug is hand-woven with Italian hemp yarn. Each thread consists of 50 thin threads spun together and dyed in bio colour. When the rug is viewed from different distances it gradually opens up revealing fields of colours, optical intensities, and the opportunity to see details that you don’t immediately recognise. The visual experience of the rug is inspired by the Japanese concept of MA 間 in relation to time, place and composition. The concept of MA 間 can be been described as the negative space, a pause in time, an interval or emptiness in space.

The rug is part of an ongoing project investigating how the familiar hemp plant can be transformed into durable sustainable woven textiles.

Produced in collaboration with Massimo Copenhagen.

About the designer

Tanja Kirst’s work is characterized by reflection on thoughts and details that you don’t immediately recognize. This includes subtle colour transition and gradation into shades.

Tanja Kirst works with hemp as a sustainable alternative in textile design, rethinking a well-known material in a space between design and craftsmanship, she gives this eco-friendly material a whole new appeal. With interaction and observation, all the functions and details can be experienced over time. This experimental process and way of designing is developed with an intention to add more value to the textile – and to give a poetic approach and longevity to the product.
