The side table „Kinoko“ by Studio Bovti is the result of a fusion between digital fabrication methods and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, embodied in the form of an abstract, organic mushroom. The digital technology aspect involves the three-dimensional design of the table’s base, which is pre-produced in segmented parts via 3D printing. These segments are then assembled like a three-dimensional puzzle, following the accompanying isometric drawing. The entire base geometry is subsequently coated by hand in multiple layers of plaster, giving the piece its raw, textured finish. The representation of traditional craftsmanship is found in the three hand-thrown ceramic plates that serve as the tabletop. These plates are twice kiln-fired using the unique “sea cucumber” glaze, whose glossy surface evokes the natural beauty of a starlit sky. The deliberate contrast between the rough, plaster-modeled base and the smooth, glossy ceramics highlights the distinction between the two materials. Yet, they harmonize beautifully, giving the piece a calm and mindful presence in any space. Due to the high degree of handcraftsmanship involved, both in the surface treatment of the base and in the throwing of the plates, each Kinoko side table is a unique piece that cannot be precisely reproduced. Each version exhibits slight differences in glazing or plaster modeling, making it one of a kind.
The Kinoko coffee table by Studio Bovti was awarded a newcomer award at Edit Napoli, 2024, for successfully blending innovation and tradition in a contemporary way. Part of a series that merges traditional craftsmanship with digital production, Kinoko experiments with materials like papier-mâché, stone, and ceramic, giving the table a strong physical presence. Its playful, organic shapes, inspired by cartoons and fantasy, invite both visual and tactile exploration.
