Description

The Kawa Series is crafted using an unusual, painstakingly refined technique unique to Luft Tanaka. Each creation begins as a simple sketch and transforms into a leather mold. After cutting, sewing, and preparing the mold for casting, liquid porcelain is poured inside, slowly forming a thin layer along the leather surface. Once the porcelain sets, the mold is carefully cut at the seams and gently peeled away, allowing the piece to be fired in a kiln.

The translucent porcelain diffuser casts a warm-colored glow, perfect for a dining room or kitchen. Please inquire about customization requests, including custom shapes, finishes, and configurations.

Luft Tanaka is a Japanese artist and designer based in New York City. Utilizing his intuitive understanding of materials and processes, Luft creates distinct and covetable art objects, furniture and lighting. His most expansive body of work, the Kawa Series, is the product of a method unique to his practice: the casting of porcelain into leather molds, perfected over years of experimentation and refinement. Originally from Kasugai, Japan, Luft moved to New York City in 2008 and earned a degree in Product Design from Parsons School of Design.
