For the “Safeefah x Sand Casting” Design Lab, Irthi collaborated with designers Nada Taryam, Faisal Tabbarah, and Khawla Al Hashimi from design studio Architecture + Other Things to produce a collection of sand casted furniture – including a table and a set of stools.
The designers and Irthi’s Bidwa trainees from the Bidwa Social Development Programme experimented with different combinations of water, sand, concrete, clay, and soil to create a substance that can set into a rock-like material. The final material was cast in special frames filled with sand.
The Bidwa artisans used their Safeefah weaving skills to weave camel leather to create the seats of the stools, resulting in this exquisite and unique collection of furniture.
This piece has been produced during the “Design Labs” initiative by Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council.
