Out of the Cage Collection:
Liquid glass is blown into various shapes and sizes using birdcages as the “mold.”
Once home to colorful birds, the cages transcend their existence as simple containers with the addition of new life.
They now hold vibrant blown glass just as they once held their feathered prisoners.
These objects are a result of the interaction of hot fluid glass with the wiry molds, which serves to question common perceptions of confinement versus refuge; glass surfaces sit both inside and outside of what might be considered a devious trap or as a comforting shelter, marked with memories of a former life and function.
“Out of the Cage” subtly, yet with enormous imagination, expresses the inherent dichotomy between protection and custody.
