Riccardo Cenedella draws inspiration from Porta Palazzo Market, Europe’s largest market spanning 51,300 m², where thousands of vendors sell everything from fresh food to clothing and home goods, providing a livelihood for many. However, by 2 PM, as the stalls begin to close, an overwhelming amount of unsorted waste is left behind, making recycling nearly impossible. Living and working near the market, Cenedella developed a strong sense of connection to this urban landscape, inspiring him to transform its discarded remnants into sculptural works.
For this project, he chose to focus on cardboard and paper waste, reimagining these materials through a meticulous handcrafted process. The cardboard is soaked in water, combined with gypsum and PVA glue, and transformed into a malleable, sculptural medium. This material is then hand-dyed and applied to a structural base of wood and metal mesh. Once dried, each piece is sanded and finished with wax, resulting in a stone-like texture that merges the organic with the industrial.
Through this approach, Cenedella not only elevates discarded materials into art but also highlights the cycle of consumption and waste, turning overlooked remnants into thought-provoking, sculptural expressions of sustainability and urban life.
