During the First Lockdown in the Netherlands, we were obliged to stay home for about 8 weeks. The situation was surreal, all over Europe museums, cinemas, libraries, galleries, shops and all social activities were frozen. Going out was not allowed, or in a way very limited. Our ‘’normal life’’ had to stop and our routine had to drastically change. Time lost its sense and the perception of it changed drastically.
Days sometimes were extremely long and some other times flew by in a jiffy.
After the first week, I needed to find myself a practice, something which would help me to stay focused for a few hours a day and that aided in isolating myself a bit from the bombarding pieces of information which were coming from newspapers and social media.
Wood Carving was the easiest and simpler craft to apply. I basically only needed a bunch of tools, some leftover wood and a closed place where to work. So for two months, my shed became my atelier, and my daily practice was to produce furniture for my own house.
This practice really helped me physically and mentally during the lockdown, It was a way to keep up with my work, stay focused and fill the emptiness of a lockdown.
