    The Barricade Daybed No. 1 by Around the Studio is a sculptural stainless steel furniture piece that reimagines police barricades—objects that shape spaces of resistance and control—into an intimate yet provocative design. Inspired by the ongoing demonstrations and political unrest in Tbilisi, this work transforms the symbolism of division into a structure that invites rest and reflection.

    Its curved legs mimic the handles of barricades, reinforcing the connection to its urban inspiration, while the linear frame retains their industrial rigidity, creating a striking interplay of hardness and fluidity. One subtly curved corner allows the daybed to serve as both a seat and resting place, with backrests on both sides, enhancing its functionality without losing its sculptural essence.

    Adding a delicate contrast to the rigid metal, a small silver-covered bird sculpture perches on the handle—a quiet yet powerful symbol of fragility, resilience, and freedom. Through this juxtaposition, Barricade Daybed No. 1 blurs the line between political commentary and contemporary design, transforming an object of restriction into one of comfort and contemplation.

    Around the Studio is an interdisciplinary collective founded by Tika Shelia and Ano Jishkariani, based in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 2021. The Studio explores cultural, social, and political themes through multidisciplinary projects that merge community engagement and collaboration. The studio employs a diverse range of practices, including object design, installation, and relational or video art.  Their practice focuses on transforming objects and materials that emerge from collective actions into functional, everyday items. By reimagining public symbols as domestic objects, Around the Studio creates a dialogue between personal environments and larger societal movements. By integrating local traditions, contemporary issues, and diverse disciplines, Around the Studio seeks to create spaces and experiences that encourage reflection, participation, and collective action.
