The Abbas wall mirror by Joana Teixeira is made in aluminium through the hands of different people and companies. A kind of temporary community formed around a shared goal. That collective involvement is essential in all my work, I want people to feel part of something more than just a product. The concept behind Abbas, with its depth and layered structure, reflects a need for awareness and assimilation. In fast-paced times, my work is increasingly influenced by the idea of slowing down, being present, and fostering genuine connection. While studying the space between the “before and after” of a mirror’s reflection, that cognitive moment of recognition, memory, and identity, I was reminded of Kiarostami’s 24 Frames, which explores what happens before and after a still image. That idea of a shifting present is what shaped Abbas, with its 8 cm depth representing mental processing, a frame calling us into presence and awareness. Like a new dimension.
