Curatorial Statement
Madrid shares with Barcelona many of its characteristics. It is also chaotic, contradictory and very energetic. But at the same time, it is a city that loves improvisation and a go-with-the-flow attitude, something that contributes to a relaxed and fresh approach to design. Instead, as opposed to Barcelona, it doesn’t have a long history in design, this is a rather new activity that flourished in the last two decades.
The economic crisis and construction bubble struck very hard in Madrid and, ironically, it has had a positive impact on design. Young designers found a large number of craftsmen (who used to work for big companies in the construction world and found themselves in a difficult situation), open to taking on more experimental work outside of their comfort zone. They gave the designers their time and expertise to explore new ideas, something that would have been impossible a few years back.
