The Surface Chair by Studio NAWA is a radical design experiment, translating idealized digital objects into physical reality. In the world of digital simulation, everything is constructed from points, lines, and infinitely thin surfaces—folded, bent, and stretched to create form. With its fluid geometry and mirror-polished stainless steel surface, the Surface Chair embodies this transformation, where an object with virtually no tolerances in the digital realm meets the inherent imperfections of the material world.
Rooted in Baroque calculus, which conceived time and space as smooth and continuous, the chair draws from the era’s pursuit of an idealized material—one that was isotropic, uniform, and seamless. Stainless steel, developed in the 19th century, comes closest to realizing this theoretical perfection, embodying the smoothness and homogeneity once imagined but never attained. Today, digital modeling carries forward this legacy, manipulating infinitely pliable abstract surfaces, much like those envisioned in Baroque mathematics.
Inspired by these historical and theoretical foundations, each Surface Chair is digitally modeled and meticulously hand-forged, transforming a single sheet of stainless steel into a sculptural, weightless yet structured form. Emerging from the digital void, it interacts with its environment through reflection, distortion, and movement, engaging in a constant dialogue with the space beyond itself—a chair that is at once static and dynamic, digital and tangible, theoretical and real.
Surface Chair is designed and made from a single material – mirror-polished 304 stainless steel. Made to stand the test of time.
