This “Wooden Textile” by Berlin-based designer Elisa Strozyk is a groundbreaking fusion of wood and fabric, redefining the boundaries between soft textiles and rigid surfaces. Developed in 2009 through an innovative hand-crafted technique, this flexible hybrid material transforms thin wooden triangles into floating geometric patterns, creating a visually dynamic and tactile experience.

“Intarsia”, a standout design within the Wooden Textile collection, draws inspiration from traditional marquetry patterns, reinterpreting them through a modern lens with gradient shades of gray. The carefully placed wooden segments form intricate compositions that shift in appearance depending on how the textile is arranged or draped, offering endless design possibilities.

By merging craftsmanship with material innovation, Elisa Strozyk has created a truly unique design language that balances tradition and modernity, making “Intarsia” both a functional material and an artistic statement piece for interiors and installations.

Bridging textile and furniture design, Elisa Strozyk experiments with a multitude of materials and forms. Her work pushes boundaries between both 2D and 3D designs as well as between hard and soft materials — she perpetually plays with expectations of how these materials behave. Strozyk founded her design label in 2009 after developing and launching her signature flexible hybrid material, Wooden Textile. To create this one-of-a-kind material, she harnesses traditional marquetry techniques to hand-place hundreds of individual wooden triangles onto a textile base. The tiles’ geometry and size influence the flexibility and mobility of the resulting floating solid pattern. Her multifaceted product portfolio also includes Ceramic Tables, a unique series of side tables made using experimental glazing techniques, and Woven Glass, a series of light objects that blends traditional weaving techniques with glass fusing. “I transform familiar materials into unusual physical states — wood becomes as flexible as a textile or glass morphs into threads of a woven structure.” Strozyk goes beyond designing her own collections and regularly collaborates with other artists, designers and brands to bring dynamic fashion and interior projects to life. In the future, she is looking to extend her work further into the fine art field, as was the case in a recent collaboration with a photographer to bring photo prints onto her Wooden Textile objects. She is also working on a new collection of wooden objects using origami paper folding techniques. Strozyk studied Textile and Surface Design at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee before moving to London, where she obtained an MA in Future Textiles at Central Saint Martins. In 2010, she received the German Design Award for her innovative designs. She has showcased her work internationally at esteemed venues, including the Milan Furniture Fair, Design Miami and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
