The objects I’ve created are the initial steps of gaining awareness – of taking unwanted materials and imbuing them with value. The objects have been created almost entirely using unwanted plasterboard, a material that is unassuming and in abundance anywhere around London.
My aim with this piece was to create a coherent visual language throughout the whole process, forming a narrative that explicitly connected the original material and the finished piece. The rounded, simple, and earthy shapes convey a softness and a lightness that juxtapose the harsh industrial connotations of plasterboard, whilst still allowing the material itself to shine – it’s unequivocally not a matter of disregarding the material’s origins completely, rather, portraying them in a different context to create a new identity.
Each piece will have natural variations in color between each piece, and the size, and shape will slightly vary due to their handmade nature.
