Fengshui – the ancient traditional Chinese practice has been evolving throughout the changing times and continues adapting the latest development of the interior space and exterior landscape. Such characteristic of adaptation and constantly evolving has made the ancient practice still valid in the current day and also indicates potential in the future. So how do we define Fengshui in the present day? If there is a physical form of it what would it look like? With these hypothesis questions, Manifold started the project “Ornament” – a series of custom solid wood panels that reinterpret the traditional Fengshui ornament pattern produced using contemporary fabrication techniques and creative approaches.
For the process, a pattern is selected and blurred as a bump map texture that is soon to be applied to modify the surface of a disc in a 3D space. Such 3D data then has been used to CNC on top of a solid wood panel, which will produce the final piece. Pieces in the series can be produced in various sizes based on the selected pattern, and material selection is limited to solid natural wood, particularly teak or walnut.
