Volaka vol 2 by Chryssa Kotoula is one of the first vessels from the project “An Archaeology of the Studio,” a vessel created in circular terrazzo ceramic material.
Circular Terrazzo is a unique ceramic material created to address glaze waste in ceramics. Composed of reclaimed studio waste and inspired by the improvisational nature of terrazzo, salvaged glaze remnants are integrated into the clay body. Unlike traditional ceramics, where clay serves as the structural medium and glaze as a protective layer, Circular Terrazzo adapts the terrazzo-making technique by using glaze as an integral part of the clay body. The glaze melts and bursts through the clay during firing, resulting in a wonderful and unexpected texture. The chemical structures of the two materials bond seamlessly, creating a stronger and more durable composition. Each piece is unique and different from the other.
The same object can be made in various colours of clay. Customised objects such as vases, centrepieces, bowls, plates and sculptures can be designed for a special edition.
