To DASKSHAPED’s eye, this sculptural vessel’s aluminum strips resemble the leaf springs that support the bed of a pickup truck. The theory of layering has always been deeply compelling to the studio. DUSKSHAPED employs it and returns to it often in their longstanding sub-practice of intricate paper cutting. However, this is the most prominent example thus far of material layering in their metal work. That an entire vehicle could be suspended by ingeniously simple layers is astonishing.
This vessel is intended as a home for magazines, albums, or other types of relatively flat-form treasures kept on display in living spaces. Open edition and made to order, with a current build time of 3-5 weeks. Aluminum, bent by hand. Holds 4-8 magazines or 6-10 records.
The Truckbed Maggo vessel is part of the collection “Bad Graces,” conceived and designed during a period when the designer lost the ability to walk. A lot of reading, a lot of dreaming, and a lot of musing on what it means to trust one’s body for daily use filled these months.
Sustainability is the organizing principle, and the intention is for their work to be circular: cherished for hundreds of years, but circular nonetheless given a geologic time scale, the scale that matters. That is why DUSKSHAPED’s practice is centered on metals, the only common building materials that are systematically recycled and infinitely recyclable. Post-life recycling is highly encouraged via a return to any local metal yard. Care: Wipe clean with a water-dampened cloth.
