Rolling is a chopstick rest by Dong Liu, made from natural pebbles.
Inspired by the formation of river pebbles, the designer selects stones of the appropriate size and shape, carves grooves for functionality, and then uses a machine to roll and grind them with water and abrasive materials to simulate the natural state of a pebble in a river. Eventually, all artificially crafted edges are smoothed out, and the pebble is restored to its rounded, natural state while retaining its functionality as a chopstick rest.
By compressing the centuries-long journey of a pebble into a brief, tangible moment, this process highlights the power of natural erosion and creates a unique aesthetic. Here, craftsmanship, machining, and the forces of nature are harmonized.
