The Quilted Lamp emphasizes the inherent movement of textile. Using sewing as a constructive element the shade has no hard structure restricting the textile — allowing it to move freely. The embedded movement of the material creates a subtle yet characteristic shape where the rhythmic repetition of the stitching works as a complimenting counterpart. The quilted material is, despite its familiarity, surprising in the context of the lamp and challenges our expectations of material, form and function. With reference to the classic rice paper lamp, the quilted shade contains some archetypal themes such as the horizontal lines and the open cone shape, making the lamp recognizable despite its surprising materiality.
