Description

This striking sculptural stool by Eunchong Park explores the interplay of contrasting forms, materials, and textures. Two flowing arcs converge, creating a unified yet dynamic sculpture that juxtaposes the organic fluidity of curves with the sharp angularity of the base. The design captures a dialogue of tension and harmony, emphasizing the delicate balance between opposing qualities.

Eunchong Park masterfully merges materials and forms that initially appear at odds, resulting in a cohesive and thought-provoking composition. Stainless steel serves as the primary medium, celebrated for its strength and adaptability. By intentionally minimizing the polishing process, the artist retains heat-induced discolorations from welding, imbuing the metal with subtle, iridescent hues that break away from its typical monotony. This nuanced finish highlights the raw beauty of the material while adding depth and character to the piece.

The addition of thick, dark leather over the metal plate introduces both visual and tactile contrast. This soft yet durable element enhances the sculpture’s functionality while reinforcing its artistic narrative. The interplay of metal and leather symbolizes the fusion of strength and subtlety, rigidity and flexibility, creating a balanced and evocative work.

Key Features:

  • Contrasting Forms: Organic arcs intersect with angular geometry, creating a dynamic visual tension.
  • Artisanal Material Finishes: Heat-induced discoloration on stainless steel adds natural, unique coloration.
  • Mixed Materials: The use of dark leather enhances both the visual appeal and practicality of the piece.
  • Thoughtful Design: A celebration of contrasts—fluid vs. rigid, organic vs. geometric—resulting in an artwork that speaks to harmony through opposition.

Eunchong Park’s Objects Of Function No.2403 is a testament to the beauty of contrasts, transforming disparate elements into a unified, functional piece of art that captivates and inspires.

About Park Eunchong Studio Visit Showroom →

Eunchong Park creates furniture or lighting using formative language of intersecting vertical and horizontal structures. The intersecting vertical and horizontal structures create ‘balance’ by harmonizing formative elements of different characteristics, and also represents a visual contrasts of ‘imbalance’ within that balance In addition, He tries to express the ‘balance’ and ‘imbalance’ through materials, which is evident in his efforts to mix artificial and natural elements or to express diverse textures and colors from a single material. Based on this formative language, his works share the common theme of a ‘objects of function’, reflecting his desire for his works to be more than just static pieces, imbuing them with life and artistic value even when not actively used. He mainly uses metals such as iron or stainless steel as materials, which is closely related to his major. He majored in metal crafts during his undergraduate and master's programs and the various metalworking techniques he experienced the are still embedded in his works today. The ‘craftmanship’ he learned at that time is an expression method and value that he considers most important.
