For the “Oud x Metal” Design Lab, Irthi collaborated with UK-based, V&A acquired. and Loewe shortlisted artist, Adi Toch, to produce a series of contemporary metal Oud oil containers and Oud wood incense burners inspired by Islamic metalwork aesthetics. The hand-made vessels use traditional silver-smithing techniques with experimental surface texturing and patination.
Irthi’s Bidwa trainees from the Bidwa Social Development Programme learned how to texture and colour the metal as part of the design lab, contributing to the final products. The incense burners (called “Midkhans” in Arabic) are wide and open to help disperse the scent of the burning Oud, while the Oud oil containers are smaller and covered in order to protect their contents.
This piece has been produced during the “Design Labs” initiative by Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council.
