Kan came to life when Benjamin Nordsmark found himself left with a great amount of thin slices of cut-off oak wood from previous projects. The desire to find use in those pieces developed into a square tube shape as legs that would become the foundation for a new simple chair. With the hollow construction in the legs, light is able to pass through and illustrate the lightness of the chair.
To pursue the aspect of sustainable design, the seat and back of the chair were also crafted from leftover pieces in the material forescolor, which seamlessly harmonized with light oak wood. The seat consists of two similar layers of orange forescolor that were milled out as a cross at the bottom and glued together in a sandwich construction to achieve the lightest and strongest creation possible. The thin oak list was again used as a frame around the seat to provide structure for the legs and would fulfill the square and simple appearance.
The name Kan comes from the Japanese word for tube (管) but can also relate to the term simplicity (簡) and was chosen for the chair because of its ideal coherence.´
This chair can be purchased in different colors on seat and back. The orange on the seat is the recommended color for this piece.
