For the “Safeefah x Gold Casting” Design Lab, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council collaborated with Alia bin Omair, a UAE-based jewellery designer, to produce gold cast weaves. Bidwa’s artisans from the Bidwa Social Development Programme elevated the production of Safeefah weaves into wearable elements by implementing an additional step to the process: casting the weaves in gold.
The nimble fingers of the artisans have combined their knowledge of Emirati Safeefah weaving techniques with Alia’s designs to produce a collection of necklaces, rings, earrings, and wearable perfume bottles.
The artisans wove the palm fronds to execute bin Omair’s vision. A mould was created by imprinting the Safeefah creations in wax and 18k gold was cast to create the unique collection of jewellery.
This piece has been produced during the “Design Labs” initiative by Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council.
