Dzovag Kotchian is a French designer based in the south of France. His work develops through theoretical reflection and artistic research. Experimentation with materials, uses and manufacturing techniques is central to his projects.
Since 2023, he has been focusing on the creation of objects in stabilized raw clay, using a manufacturing process he has been developing over several years.
The origins of this project lie in the exploration of one material: raw earth. Its use dates back to the origins of humanity, and it awakens in man an emotional attachment to nature. Experimentation and the search for new applications in the field of design have prompted him to consider it in a whole new way. Letting himself be guided by the material, he developed a new manufacturing process using stabilized raw earth.
Here, the earth is neither worked nor shaped, but simply delicately coats the immersed structure. This natural coating covers the assemblies and binds the different parts together, creating objects that seem to have been created from a single block. This unprecedented technique gives him total freedom in the shapes he wishes to give his objects, giving rise to light, aerial objects with shapes that are sometimes organic, sometimes geometric. His delicate creations hide their solidity behind a graceful, poetic appearance.
