Description

Irthi collaborated with American designer Jennifer Zurick, a Smithsonian Museum acquired artist and Loewe craft prize commissioned craft artist, to combine Safeefah and other weaving techniques to create a collection of sculptural hand bags using braided camel leather.

Designed using an innovative combination of ancient indigenous weaving traditions from both the United Arab Emirates and the United States, these finely woven, contemporary handbags cross international borders and portray the bond of the creative spirit of women and weavers from different cultures around the world.

The unique quality of this collection comes from the use of traditional Safeefah techniques. Safeefah products have traditionally been made with palm fronds and used as mats and baskets, constructed as long woven strips which are coiled and sewn together.

Zurick, who is a contemporary basket-weaver, worked with Irthi’s Bidwa artisans and trainees from the Bidwa Social Development Programme to create fashionable and functional bag designs with a natural rustic aesthetic. By utilising Emirati camel leather in place of the palm, the pieces take the traditional weave in an exciting new direction.

IRTHI Contemporary Crafts Council

Representing both traditional and modern crafts across the MENASEA and Central Asia regions, working with partner organisations, and championing artisans and designers, the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council is looking at the empowerment of women professionally and socially. The council aims to provide a fresh narrative for women, by developing new market opportunities, and sectors, delivering social development programs and vocational training, as well as preserving the skills and rich cultural heritage of the UAE for current and future generations through its five initiatives: Bidwa Social Development Programme, which employs 40 artisans and provides them with vocational training and helps them find new markets for their skills through commercial collaborations and regional artisan exchange programmes. Artisan Skills Exchange Programme, which enables the development of artisans’ capacities and technical skills as well as social development through a series of artisanal skill exchanges within the MENASEA region. Hirfati Youth Programme that seeks to train and engage with the next generation of designers and artists through a mix of activities that combine traditional and contemporary crafts. Azyame Fashion Entrepreneurs Programme that aims to develop the next generation of UAE-based fashion designers through training, mentoring and business development. Crafts Dialogue, a unique project that brings together the Council with Barcelona-based Creative Dialogue to create works, which will marry Emirati and international crafts into contemporary designs. Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council is an affiliate of NAMA Women Advancement Establishment, an organisation that was established under an Amiri decree by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah.

As Belgium is a small country without a very distinctive, nationalistic pride, artists and designers can work in complete freedom. There’s no higher purpose to be served. Creations can be the most individual expression of the most individual emotion. Thanks to this liberal creative climate – in combination with a strong, historical artistic tradition and qualitative art schools – Belgian art, design, and its collectors have gained international recognition for their avant-gardism. Besides, Belgium has always been a melting pot of different cultures, combining both German and Roman influences. This historical context gives designers the opportunity to colour outside the lines and outspokenly explore the borders between art, design, crafts, and industry. Strict typologies are left behind; rather, banal materials are transformed for a high-end context and meaningful stories are transmitted as an extra emotional layer. In doing so, these emancipated creations break out of traditional frames of reference, open up to everyone, and stand with both feet in our multicultural and multi-layered contemporary society.
