Canyons, shaped over millennia by the relentless process of erosion, reveal majestic cliffs that stand exposed on valley walls. Their imposing, mysterious beauty captivates Ceren Gürkan, inspiring her to create the Abyss series as a tribute to their grandeur and allure.

Each piece in the Abyss series is a deeply personal expression, an artistic attempt to convey the profound emotions Ceren experiences when standing on the edge of a canyon, perched on a rock, or enveloped in the wet darkness of a cave. These moments evoke a powerful duality—big yet small, safe yet vulnerable, silent yet deafening—that she channels into her work.

Through organic, almost coincidental structures, Ceren seeks to visualize hidden narratives within these natural wonders. Unlike her other collections, the forms in Abyss are intentionally abstract and undefined, challenging the viewer to interpret their meaning. Created in a meditative state, accompanied by music and a quiet mind, each piece emerges as a unique and introspective work of art, embodying the raw and unspoken stories of nature’s most enigmatic landscapes.

Ceren views design as an exploration of material memory and the emotional resonance of form. Based in Istanbul, the ceramic artist and designer works with glass, clay, and wood, treating them as living narratives shaped by craftsmanship and time. Through her brand Maiizen, she reinterprets traditional glass-blowing to create sculptural lighting installations. In her independent practice, she works with stoneware and porcelain to investigate the raw boundaries of form and the tactile honesty of the medium. Her work is an invitation to observe the subtle rhythms of nature and the quiet interaction between light, surface, and human touch.
