Biography

Bureau of Entropy is a design collective founded in 2025 by Marvin Julian Freund and Matthias Figurowicz. United by a lifelong friendship, their shared journey began in the world of toolmaking, where they mastered the fundamentals of precise metalworking – turning, milling, filing, polishing. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for a design approach rooted in structural logic and material sensitivity. Marvin later studied architecture, focusing on spatial composition and proportion, while Matthias pursued mechanical engineering, specializing in construction and technical systems. Their different backgrounds converge in a shared vision that combines architectural sensibility with engineering precision.

At the core of their work lies a clear functional logic: each object is conceived from the inside out – not as a form that follows function, but as one that emerges in parallel with it. Inspired by the architectural principle that form and function are one, they create reduced objects shaped by discipline, spatial tension, and structural clarity.

Their work draws inspiration from the raw materiality of Brutalism, the utopian visions of the Space Age, and the geometric clarity of ancient cultures. Sometimes, their pieces feel both familiar and speculative.

A defining feature of their approach is a precisely developed construction method based on a slot-and-fit system. There are no screws, no welding – each lamp is assembled through a defined sequence of interlocking parts. The order of assembly is crucial, with tolerances so fine, they are measured in fractions of a human hair. These objects are held together by tension, friction, and precision alone – as if assembled from within.

Aluminium is their material of choice – selected for its dynamic interaction with light. Throughout the day, it shifts from warm reflection to cool precision to atmospheric radiance. Bureau of Entropy creates timeless, spatially resonant objects that shape a room not through volume, but through quiet presence.
