SHIFTING MATTER: An Exploration of Nature’s Role in Design and Art
This May, Roca NYC Showroom presents Shifting Matter, an immersive group exhibition that brings nature and design into a unique dialogue, inviting attendees to reconsider how materials shape both our world and our interactions with it. Curated by artists Sabrina Merayo Nuñez and Deville Cohen, Shifting Matter emphasizes the transformative power of nature-related materials, positioning them as active collaborators in the creative process rather than useful resources.

The Exploration of Nature, Art, and Design
Spanning 7,900 square feet in the heart of New York’s Flatiron District, the exhibition features a diverse array of works by artists and designers who challenge the boundaries between human and non-human, art and functionality. Through materials such as mycelium, algae, recycled plastic, and SCOBY, the creators explore the complexities of change in pursuit of sustainable, transformative practices. This celebration of materiality delves into the interplay between science, nature, and art, questioning the future of design and the tensions inherent in our transition toward sustainability.

Embracing Material Transformation
The works on display embrace natural processes—temperature, photosynthesis, evaporation—as creative tools, transforming raw matter into innovative designs that reflect the organic flux of the world around us. Rather than adhering to a “green” label, Shifting Matter delves deeper, revealing the challenges and potential of working with nature itself. It’s an invitation to witness the future of design from the perspective of a material world in motion.

Public Program and Climate Impact Report
Shifting Matter opens on May 14, 2025, with an evening reception from 6-9PM, and will be accompanied by a public program on May 20 at 6PM, in partnership with Artists Commit, to discuss the climate impact of artistic practices.

Participating Artists and Designers
The exhibition features works by artists including Kamilla Csegzi, Deville Cohen, Claudia Kaatziza Cortinez, Sabrina Merayo Nuñez, and many more.
