Curatorial Statement
For those of us who live in a Mediterranean country it is only natural to assume that some of our customs and our lifestyles are something we share with the rest of the world. Only when you travel and explore do you realize how distinctive it is and how it suits our personality and way of life. There are so many things we wrongly take for granted: from the general feeling of warmth to the essential of the spirit, the simplicity of the overall atmosphere, the fluidity between the indoors and outdoors… The Mediterranean relays in natural materials, in the handmade, the texture, in the subtle yet deep choice of colors, the sensuality of shapes. Wood, rattan, tile, terracotta, linen, ceramics, wrought iron, glass – all produced locally, intuitively contributing to a sustainable world in which products are the result of a strong and passionate heritage, in which imperfections are regarded as a positive sign of humanity.
In “The Rear-View Mirror”, I have tried to put together a collection which looks back at our traditions and draws these into the development of objects and furniture that belong in the future. The collection features a group of designers who work with different materials and processes, who certainly belong to a Mediterranean culture, and who have different ways of interpreting what that means. I chose the building La Muralla Roja by Ricardo Boffill as an imaginary setting because it has references to the Arabic past of Mediterranean architecture, with a certain idea of a kasbah in which the private and the public are hardly separated through a series of patios, stairs, and bridges that connect the building’s areas. It is an example of how to translate heritage into a modern language, the same spirit I think the selected designers share as well.
