Curatorial Statement
Race with Nature reflects the never-ending competition between humans and nature; the chosen scenography of the exhibit reveals the history of the landscape as four villages and two cemeteries were swallowed by the shifting sands at Curonian Spit (Dead Dunes, Lithuania) in 1675-1854. The result of human activity and dominating western winds encouraged dunes to travel from 0,5 to 15 meters per year reaching a height of up to 53 meters.
The surrounding landscape of dunes continuously transforms and accommodates design pieces that symbolize the urbanized world; an aesthetic juxtaposition allows the audience to bear witness to the social complications of how the material object may enter the organic environment. This unique place encourages communal memory – underscoring how the landscape contains integral embodied knowledge. Highlights include the ‘Naïve Chair,’ reflective of simplicity and the fast pace of urban life – it can be easily “flat” packed and sent in a pizza size box while ‘Envisioned Comfort Armchair’ repeats human body lines and associates with commodious life elements – luxury, sophistication, and neatness. Such life is totally opposite to the natural environment which is beautiful because of all imperfections, roughness, and dirt. ‘Raitūzai Mirror’ combines industrial precision with nature-inspired gypsum ornaments from historical buildings.
The curated collection should help to remember how fragile the line is between life and death – how impossible it is to fight against nature – a phenomenon that never ceases to produce itself in the image of victory.
