Curatorial Statement
Contemporary design in Turkey is largely unknown on the international stage. Historically, the country had a rich workshop culture that emphasized artisanal craft, with a focus on materials such as bronze, textile, brass, ceramics and stone and the use of techniques that utilized abstract geometries and patterns. While Turkish design today has come to incorporate non-traditional materials such as glass and wood, its roots in craftwork using premodern materials continue to shape the country’s contemporary design culture.
