Description

A Boi is an ongoing series of timeless textile pieces that recall and rethink the past, bringing new questions to the present. Every piece is unique and has a special rhythm and mix of colour.

The material used in the textiles consists of a very high quality alpaca wool that comes from Peru. Alpaca wool has beautiful properties including an adaptation to body temperature and very kind touch.

I started this textile collaboration with William some years ago; he is an extremely talented handicraft artisan from a small town near Bogotá. There, he has a studio. This town owns a long lasting tradition of textile making. Together with William, we sit down by the loom and experiment with the traditional elements that have constituted the textile iconography of this place since pre-colonial times. We weave together for days. We meet to exchange know-how and share different perspectives on how craft and contemporary design may intersect. Together, we look at the traditional iconography and weaving structures of his region and we twist and reinterpret these graphic symbols to create a new perception of them and how we interpret them.

For me, it is extremely important to have a clear, close, and fair working relationship with William, with a lot of respect for each other ́s knowledge and opinions. We both settle our conditions in a non-hierarchic and horizontal way.

About Ana María Gómez Visit Showroom →

amgs is a studio created by Colombian designer Ana María Gómez after finishing a Master in Textile Design at La Cambre, Brussels (2015). She makes pieces that go from wearable items to eclectic functional furniture, often as the result of collaborations. The core of amgs is to experiment with the visual, tactile, and spatial dimension of textiles. In recent years, Ana María has been experimenting in different ways with textile based on an awareness of different cultural and social worlds. She is highly interested in fortunate encounters between different cultures and ways of thinking, especially where textile has been used as language, as a way to communicate. Her aim is to gain knowledge of traditional and contemporary ways of working with textile. The relation between textile, body, and space is an important issue for her and feeds into the special interest she has in theatre and performance. She had previously worked in the production of costumes and scenography with a focus on the use of textiles. amgs, is part of the organisation le nœud, associated with Véronique Van Lierde, which produces artistic projects, most of the time, related between music and textile.
