    Description

    After designing “Captured”, a series of lights, in 2012 for Lobmeyr, Michael Anastassiades is explores the archaic beauty of broken glass by creating the “Flint” Tumbler.

    These pieces are inspired by hand axes made from flint stone, which are said to be the first human creation, and the fact that early glass working techniques have their origin in the way we shape stone. Although appearing simple, the objects demand the highest sensitivity from their craftsmen to meet Anastassiades’ and Lobmeyr’s standards.

    Each tumbler is unique and requires about an hour to be crafted.

    In 1823 Josef Lobmeyr opened his first little shop in the heart of Vienna. Since then six generations unveil the miracle of glass. Together with designers like Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Ted Muehling and Michael Anastassiades classics in handmade crystal and chandeliers were born, which are appreciated by connoisseurs all over the world. Lobmeyr crystal can be found in collections like the MoMA New York, V&A London and the MAK in Vienna. Lobmeyr is working steadily on a contemporary interpretation of glass, always in the awareness of the own tradition. The interest in glass, practiced in our daily work, and the dialogue with our artisans, designers and customers have time and again led to innovations. In 1835, Josef Lobmeyr equipped the table of the imperial court with the "prism cut drinking set" and received the title of a "Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court". The plain drinking set No. 4 by Ludwig Lobmeyr from 1856 can be found in many current design bibles. In cooperation with Thomas A. Edison the first electric chandelier has been introduced 1883. With the drinking set No. 231 from 1905, Stefan Rath revisited the Viennese Baroque. The muslin drinking glass set by Josef Hoffmann was created together with designers of the “Wiener Werkstätte”. In 1931, the drinking set No. 248 by Adolf Loos anticipated the shape of a plain chalice that is valid to this day. "Ambassador" and the spherical candy dishes by Oswald Haerdtl received the Grand Prix of the International Jury at the "Art Deco" exhibition in Paris in 1925.
