Description

Peter Donders’ “Vines” chair was inspired by the organic lines of the famous Belgian Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta, named for Horta’s nature-derived aesthetic. The lines of the chair seem to grow and interact like a living vine; this formal freedom is exactly what fascinates Peter Donders about working with 3D-printing. There’s no need for Donders to limit to his imagination.While it would be practically impossible create this shape by hand, 3D-printing makes it possible to produce incredibly complex shapes. Afterwards Donders finds the most appropriate technique to translate his 3D-printed model into a casted aluminum chair.

Peter Donders

Peter Donders (born 1965) worked for fifteen years as a craft-furniture designer and maker before beginning to integrate computer-based tools into his work. Now he combines his background as a craftsman with his expansive technological knowledge — the computer is now fully part of his production process. For every object Donders makes, he pushes the borders of existing technology and techniques. Besides his work with carbon fiber, he loves to explore the possibilities of 3D printing. Due to his fascination with the leading Belgian Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta, Donders\' creations feature organic lines and serene shapes, which maintain nonetheless an interesting and exiting aesthetic harmony.

Presenting “PROXIMITY”, a collection created in collaboration with Southern Sweden Design Days showcasing a selection of new work from ten designers and studios. As a whole, the collection contemplates the notion of proximity, interconnection, and belonging. Whether through contemporary references to traditional crafts techniques; the use of locally sourced materials such as wool, lichen, steel, and wood; or playful visualisations of the notion itself, the selected pieces illustrate the importance of closeness, interconnection, and kinship in uncertain times. Featuring pieces by Andrea Santivanez, Andréason & Leibel, Ebba Lindgren, Förstberg Ling, Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, Lab La Bla, Lisa Darland, Louise Hederström, Moa Lönn, and Studio M. Organised by Form/Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, Southern Sweden Design Days is an annual event currently in its second edition, which highlights sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation in design. This year’s theme, as described by the event organisers, “[reflects] on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc”. The physical exhibition of “PROXIMITY” will take place at Lokstallarna, Södra Bulltoftavägen 51, 212 22 Malmö from 19 - 22 May 2022.
