Description

Trophy by Flétta is a handmade collection from old trophies.

Trophies are a part of big moments in people’s lives, achievements, and memories. They tell a story of countless hours and strenuous exercises. They are made for a moment, when they are lifted up in triumph.

Flétta was founded by Icelandic designers Birta Rós Brynjólfsdóttir and Hrefna Sigurðardóttir in 2017 and, as a studio, focuses on responsible design, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Their work makes use of uncommon or unused materials and experimental techniques to produce pieces which are innovative, unique, and a basis for social commentary. Their series “Minute” reflects this practice and commentary through their take on mass production and local craft. Each candle holder was created by hand in one minute, combining the notion of individual craftsmanship with a rapid production practice. The tradition of handcrafted work is sustained despite the limited time frame and allows for a local product to be produced en masse.

Flétta
Designers Birta Rós Brynjólfsdóttir and Hrefna Sigurðardóttir founded Studio Flétta in 2017 but have been working together since 2014. Both with backgrounds in product design from the Iceland Academy of the Arts, they bring a high degree of conceptual and process innovation to their works using mundane or often overlooked products and materials. Their practice revolves around responsible design, utilizing reused materials and local production with an evident respect for craftsmanship and storytelling. Studio Flétta’s works include Denim on denim on denim on denim, a collaboration with fashion designer, Steinunn Eyja Halldórsdóttir and the Red Cross of Iceland to address the yearly 2000 tonnes of textiles exported by the Red Cross to be recycled, while the country imports 3800 tonnes of textile a year. This level of social commitment has been extended with Minute, a line of candlestick holders where each piece is shaped by hand from the slab of clay in only one minute, to ensure a local production resulting in an affordable product.
