MdSt Studio studio considers furniture and especially handcrafted furniture to live with people for a lifetime or more. The large dimensioned platter is made from poplar trees who lived near to the river. The studio gave part of the trunks a new life by making a platter of it. The form of the platter is rough, a bit archetypal. It has strong influences of the comic films where the suggestion to indicate an object is more important than the personal details of it. It is made on a lathe and the details are made with a saw. The platter emphasizes the fact that wood never dies: cracks, restorations, changes of color are all part of the process of ‘life’. The forms are developed to sustain and show this qualities, to make beings of our objects.
MdSt-studio is very concerned about nature. Therefore they do not want to make a piece other than when they adjust content and form that reminds the buyer of the importance to keep our earth healthy and alive. MdSt works with local woods that are not accepted by the economic market, and works with a very low ecological footprint. The studio is able to make all the avant garde objects with only the help of hand tools or with electrical tools that are only used very shortly to arrive at the desired product. This enables the studio to show that it is possible to make sophisticated avant garde design with traditional hand tools and respect for the environment.
