“FØRK HANÐLES” are a set of four candles, hand made to order in the workshops of General Life, from casts of the large bones of the prize Hereford heifer of the designers’ friend, farmer Tom Jones.
Bones and bone like forms are featured frequently in the artwork of Ivan Morison and Heather Peak Morison – Studio Morison’s lead artists. This fascination stems from the memory of a chilling early scene in Russell Hoban’s seminal post apocalyptic novel, Riddley Walker involving a starving couple, their baby, and a deal with the devil-like character of Mr Clevver.
These candles create a unique table centre piece, giving off a beautiful light, burning slowly and creating wonderful sculptural shapes as the wax peels away.

General Life is an indie product design and production house. General Life looks to bring artistry, beauty and meaning into everyday life - tempered by an outsider’s irreverence. All of General Life’s work originates in the artist’s studio and is made by hand in it’s own workshops and in collaboration with a community of small-scale fabricators in the West Midlands – the traditional heartland of British manufacturing.
General Life flows from the creative practice of Ivan Morison and Heather Peak Morison, capturing significant moments in their artistic process and shaping them into products to be shared. Ivan Morison and Heather Peak Morison have worked together as an artist duo since 2003, establishing a significant collaborative practice that transcends the divisions between art, architecture and theatre. They have produced major works for many British institutions, including Tate Modern; exhibited widely across Europe, North America and Australasia; and represented Wales at the 52nd Venice Biennial. Their work is held in many collections around the world.
Presenting “PROXIMITY”, a collection created in collaboration with Southern Sweden Design Days showcasing a selection of new work from ten designers and studios. As a whole, the collection contemplates the notion of proximity, interconnection, and belonging. Whether through contemporary references to traditional crafts techniques; the use of locally sourced materials such as wool, lichen, steel, and wood; or playful visualisations of the notion itself, the selected pieces illustrate the importance of closeness, interconnection, and kinship in uncertain times.
Featuring pieces by Andrea Santivanez, Andréason & Leibel, Ebba Lindgren, Förstberg Ling, Jóna Berglind Stefánsdóttir, Lab La Bla, Lisa Darland, Louise Hederström, Moa Lönn, and Studio M.
Organised by Form/Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, Southern Sweden Design Days is an annual event currently in its second edition, which highlights sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation in design. This year’s theme, as described by the event organisers, “[reflects] on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc”.
The physical exhibition of “PROXIMITY” will take place at Lokstallarna, Södra Bulltoftavägen 51, 212 22 Malmö from 19 - 22 May 2022.
