The starting point of this project was the designers love of cement.

This piece is a part of a collection named Entrance and includes 6 wall mounted, sculptural objects/shelves made of untreated 5 mm thick cement sheet. Each piece is unique and hand-crafted by the designers themselves. The fiber-cement is from Swiss Pearl, a cement factory in Switzerland. The material, traditionally used as facade cladding and roof tiles, has unique properties in terms of strength, moldability and texture. The molding process allows the character of the material to shine through and influence the end product.

The collection is a further development of chosen objects from an exhibition the designers held in 2015 named “Entrance to a Material”. The name was referring to the designers entrance to that unknown material and also the context of the objects, which were storage-objects designed for the entrance of a home.

About the designer

Reykjavík based duo, Hildur Steinþórsdóttir & Rúna Thors, who represent TOS, started working together in 2011. Being trained in the field of Architecture, Design and Fine Art they focus on spaces, objects and curation. They approach their projects through dialogue and exploration where the material and the process lead them to new knowledge and morphology.

Often the ordinary and visible present becomes vague and forgotten. Analogue experiences have boiled down to a minimum during the last years. We are currently in a situation where much of our regular rhythm was interrupted, the everyday was frozen and almost disappeared for a while. It became particularly evident how the environment we are functioning in, what we have or possess, matters. Layers of the past provide a means to describe the world and rethink the evident. Remembering and untangling the past and the local provides a captivating perspective through types of objects, materials, and methods of making. The Estonian collection, “Revisiting the Past”, is based on tracking the everyday and the conventional, translating observations, reconsiderations, and hints of the past into contemporary design. More than ever, the future is about rethinking the present and the past, of what we have and need. The past is heavily coded in our future.
