Description

Inspired by the music and dance genre that was born in Pará which mixes Portuguese and African elements, Maria Fernanda presents the Carimbó series, pieces that mix techniques from three different regions and that have already been present in her professional journey in previous collections.

In this line, the designer pays homage to these activities through new readings, merging what she has learned and experienced during her immersions in Brazil.

“There are so many artisans around the country, why not add them up? Exchanging information, telling stories, sharing knowledge, understanding that we are all the same, regardless of color, gender or belief is essential for cultural enrichment and for society itself. ” – Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros

Undergraduate in business administration, Maria Fernanda discovered interior design upon refurbishing an apartment. Noticing her talent for this area, Maria enrolled with Escola Panamericana de Arte and FAAP to attend interior design classes, and within time, found that her love was in designing furniture, therefore reenrolling with Escola Panamericana de Arte for a furniture design classes.

In mid 2014, the designer create a piece that was awarded honorable citations by Escola Panamericana de Arte and by Girona Design. During the research for the project, she fell in love for the artisanal work and decided to merge it to the furniture.

As of such date, she have decided to dedicate itself to rediscover the native art, to promote such great richness, to value it and to make it accessible and understandable, combining art, delicacy, inspiration and memories. From this desire, Yankatu was born.

She is responsible for the creation and development of the furniture pieces.

YANKATU - Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros
My motivation comes from my soul and flows openly, on my life and in my work. I love what I do and I do it with intensity, I live every moment and I transmit all this emotion. In each project I immerse myself deeply in the region, in their craft and in the lives of the people who make them, it is a dive governed by research and by my soul, guided by the heart, done with respect and with the rhythm dictated by time. I get transformed and provoke transformations, and these atitudes reflect in the surroundings and beyond. I believe that design and art are one of the ways to value and eternalize the ancestral knowledge of Brazilian traditional crafts and the importance of nature around us, and so I use all tools that I have to create a quilt of infinite possibilities, full of feelings. Through Yankatu I expose not only my work, I bring with me the dreams and works of the artisans and instigate new dreams. The tangible part of this work are the pieces that intertwine my touch with the lives that share their moments with me. The other part, immeasurable, is in continuous development, in a mixture of art and freedom, with no date to finish. It is a continuous development, in a relationship created around respect and trust. My desire, to be able to do this as long as I live.
