Between is part of the Gathering series which is based on the dialogue between the designer’s intervention as an artist and the weaver’s hand bringing together the yarn on the loom, leaving a trace of transition. Each piece is the area where the yarn is manually knotted together. This gives the rug a naturally unpredictable and playful character. While normally these parts of the weaving process are thrown away, they are brought together in a series to reflect the human side within industrial manufacturing processes. Each piece is unique and finished by hand with great care. Between is made out of Sisal, a strong and sustainable fibre and Wool and has a strong graphic expression of black and white color. The piece was made with the support of Tasibel

About the designer

The textile work of Bram Van Breda is a continuous exploration of our surroundings and the active role matter plays within our everyday lives. With a background in graphic and textile design, Van Breda uses tactility and form as a mediator between the space or context he’s studying and the viewer-user. His work is often related to the act of removing, recovering, and redefining. For his rug series, Van Breda works together with the Belgium Sisal weaver Tasibel Natural Fibre Flooring. Each piece is a unique and made with the leftovers of the manufacturing process. It are transition zones in the weaving process that result into a graphic and unpredictable rug, which Van Breda finishes by hand with great care. In this way he tries to build a bridge between the fast evolving textile industry and traditional craft.

New Solid is a vision to feel and live with art. It is the first show of Casa Nueva, a livable gallery space and apartment hotel initiated by designers River Valadez and Sebastián Arroyo Hoebens, built on the idea that art can be inhabited. We invite visitors to participate in the dialogue among transdisciplinary works from the contemporary art and design scene. It concerns functional art designed and conceived by artists from two magnificent cities, Mexico City and New York, in a correlation founded in geometry, technology, and crafts. The artworks, bliss for the contemplative eye and a joy to use, will invite the beholder to examine the floating and multidimensional character of concepts such as mass, volume, or weight. The location, equipped as a functional living space, can be found in the historical center of Mexico City. The event will be part of the Design Week Mexico festivities in partnership with Adorno, acting as the international design and logistics platform, as well as Ángulo Cero, an Art Gallery with astonishing designs located in Mexico City, and with the support of Yunuen Sariego, promoter and curator of contemporary art based in Mexico City.
